There's always a few basic items that you'll need when moving into your new home. You don't want to have to unpack every box just to find those items that you'll need in the first few hours. Think ahead and pack yoursef a 'Handy Pack' box that contains all the things you're likely to need from the get-go.

Keep in mind that this special box should be loaded last on the truck (so that it's first out) or travel in the car with you. Many of these items will be needed right up until the end of moving out, too.

Your Handy Box will need to be customised to suit your own needs, but here's our top ten most common items to get you started.

1) First Aid Kit

Moving can be a dangerous business. You should always have quick access to a First Aid Kit in case of an emergency. Here's an example of what your kit should probably contain, at minimum.

  • Crepe Bandage
  • Triangular Bandage
  • Saline
  • Alcohol Swabs
  • Disposable Gloves
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Band-Aids
  • Non-Adherent Pads

You can get ready-made kits from your local pharmacy or order them online through St John Ambulance.

2) Basic Cleaning Supplies

It's easier to clean as you go, rather than come back after everything has been unpacked. You will likely need some cloth, paper towel, general purpose and glass cleaners.

3) Torch

Will the power be on when you move into your new home? It's best to be prepared with a torch so that you can see what you're doing if you need to switch the power on at the metre box.

  • Don't be kept in the dark. Pack a torch so you can switch the power on at the metre box.

4) Entertainment for Children

The initial excitement of exploring their new home will only keep the little ones occupied for so long. You're likely going to want them to be entertained while you get started unpacking. Have something tucked away for the kids to play with. Think of acvtivities that are age appropriate and will hold their attention for prolonged periods, like puzzles, board games, books, colouring books, etc.

If your kids are old enough to help, hide some treats or prizes in the bottom of your moving boxes to incentivise them! Perhaps they can be responsible for setting up their own room. Allowing your children to be part of the process can help to empower them and feel like they have some more control and ownership in all this change.

5) Pet Food

Your furry friends will probably be freaking out with all this change in scenery. Pack them away a couple of tasty treats and a can or two of food to help them settle in. You'll be busy enough without having to run down to the shops just for some pet food.

Cats can be particularly territorial and do not adjust to a new home as fast as most oother pets. Make sure that you also give them something familiar as soon as possible, such as a blanket, bed or pillow that they're accustomed to curling up on. It's usually best to keep cats tucked away in a safe zone for a few days until they're ready to start exploring more of their new home.

6) Toilet Paper

A necessity that is all too often overlooked... Be sure to pack a roll or two. Good karma to those who leave a spare roll in the house you're moving from for the new residents when they're moving in..

7) Kettle and Coffee

You will want to keep the energy levels up and a good cuppa is the perfect pick-me-up when you're feeling a little overwhelmed by the endless stacks of boxes you're tasked with unpacking.

  • Don't get stuck procrastinating over all that unpacking. Procaffeinate!

8) Plastic Plates, Cups & Cutlery

You probably need, and deserve, a good meal when you've arrived at your new home. Take away is a really, really good option, but you'll want to have some disposable plates and cutlery to save you from unpacking every kitchen box just to get some dinnerware and those all-important champagne glasses - even if they are plastic!

9) Change of Clothes

Towards the end of the day you're probably in need of a shower and a change of clothes. Ready access to a quick change of attire can help you face the unpacking with fresh vigour.

10) Unpacking Tools

As you are dismantling your furniture keep in mind the tools that you have used. It will help you to know those few items that you'll really need to get things back together again at your new home. Here's a few items that most people need to get you started:

  • Scissors;
