Protect your valuable electronic devices, appliances and whitegoods with these top packing tips!
Where possible, try to use the original packing materials that your electronics came in. If you don't have access to the original packaging, use quality removal boxes instead. Never skimp on packing supplies, especially when packing electronics and electrical equipment.
Make sure that your electronics are securely packed and surrounded by adequate cushioning. Your electronics will be subjected to a great deal of movement and vibration on their journey, so it's very important that you give them the best protection possible.
2) Check the ManualMany of us have a drawer or box full of warranties and manuals that are tucked away for future reference. You never use them, but they're there! Well today is the day you can celebrate your foresight! Manuals for large electrical appliances and whitegoods will often have a section devoted to preparing the appliance for transport. You should follow their instructions wherever possible.
Don't fear if you've thrown those manuals out in a spring clean. You can find manuals for most appliances made in the last couple of decades on the Internet. Just Google the brand and product serial number and you're likely to find a digital version of the manual floating around out there in the abyss.
3) Clearly Label BoxesWhen loading the truck, your furniture removalists should be trying to place boxes that contain sensitive electrical equipment near the top of the load. Make these boxes easy to identity by labelling them with the contents on both the sides and the tops.
4) BackupBack your computer up to a portable hard drive, or a reputable 'Cloud' service, before packing it away. Make sure that you have copies of all important documents with you.
5) Take Pics of WiringIt's often a nightmare trying to reconnect all your TV's, computers and other devices when you arrive at your new home. Take pictures of your wiring configurations before disconnecting your devices for easy reference later.
Use masking tape to create descriptive labels to stick around your cables, remotes and other components so that you know which part belongs to which device. Pack them all in a separate, labelled box.
6) Time to Cool OffMajor appliances can create a great deal of heat. It's best to disconnect these items 24 hours before the move so they have the chance to cool down. You don't want them to melt other belongings, burn someone or create a fire.
7) Avoid SpillsTo avoid any messy and damaging spills, ensure that washing machines, fridges, air-conditioners, evaporative coolers, dehumidifiers and dishwashers are completely emptied, drained and dry.
You should also remove the ink cartridges from your printer and pack them in a separate plastic container (within a box).
8) Remove for Removal- Batteries can leak hazardous chemicals and can cause damage, or even fire. It's best to remove batteries from devices before transport - especially if the goods are going on a long transit or into storage.
- Microwave turntables/plates need to be removed and packed separately. They're easy to forget!
- Light bulbs should be removed from light fittings and packed securely in a separate box, or disposed of.
